Barium Carbonate (German) - 1 lb.

BaCO3. (77.66% BaO) Barium Carbonate is the main source of barium oxide in glazes. In clay bodies it imparts better translucency. Additions of .5% in ceramic slips to 3% in moist clay bodies nuetralizes sulphates which reduces scumming on ceramic surfaces. Sulphates come in soluable forms of Calcium and Magnesium. When Barium is added in sufficient amounts, it swaps the sulphates from these sulphates and turns them into carbonates. These carbonates are no longer soluable and will not travel with water to the surface of pots to scum. The Barium Carbonate becomes Barium Sulphate which is also non-soluable. Dust is toxic.
